ALUMNI STORIES: WOMEN’S ALL-SPORT TEAM

WOMEN’S ALL-SPORT TEAM

1965-69

The evolution of women’s athletics at Fullerton Junior College took a big leap from 1965 to 1969 with core team that went relatively undefeated in four competitive sports. Led by FC Hall of Fame coaches Margo Davis (Field Hockey, Basketball and Softball) and Marty Orner (Volleyball), this team of women dominated the community college scene winning many conference championships along the way.

Players such as Sharron Backus, Patty Meyers, Sue Sims, Cec Ponce, Sue Dustin Loversky, Star Golia, Sandy Poe, Shelia Reed-Rutherglen, Melanie Betts Coffman, Sue Johnson, Carolyn Faulkner, and Candy Wilson made their mark at Fullerton College not only as one of the greatest teams in the college’s history, they also paved the way for the female athletes playing at Fullerton College today.

Adopted by Margo Davis, the team motto was “winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing”. It was posted on top of the game board for all to see walking into the P.E. Hall area.

Side Note: Patty Meyers, Sue Sims, and Cec Ponce played on the first 5-player National Championship team in 1970 at Cal State Fullerton under Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Coach Billie Moore.
