STAFF STORIES: TIM BYRNES

TIM BYRNES

TIM BYRNES

Byrnes is the seventeenth head coach in Fullerton College’s long and storied football history since 1916. The former Cal State Fullerton standout enters his twentieth season as a Hornet coach and his fifth season as head coach. Fullerton College has sent some three hundred players on to the next level — among the most in all of community college football.

Byrnes was a standout athlete at Sunny Hills High School, earning All-League, All-County, and All-CIF honors as a running back in 1984. He was recruited to play at California State University, Fullerton by Coach Gene Murphy and played with the Titans for four seasons, earning All-Big West honors his senior year. After receiving his Bachelor’s Degree from CSUF, Byrnes then coached the running backs at Brea High School for two seasons. Former CSUF head coach Gene Murphy took over at Fullerton College in 1993 and hired Byrnes as one of his first Hornet assistants. Byrnes began assistant coaching the Fullerton running backs and special teams from 1993 through 1996. He earned tenure as a full-time faculty member for the physical education division in 2002. Byrnes and his wife Heidi have three children, and reside in Orange, California.

"With the tradition and history of our football program here at Fullerton College I know the expectations here are very high and I plan on doing a great job in filling those expectations. "
